Solar Panel Cleaning & Maintenance: Protect Your Yield

By Zynergy Engineering Team (Solar System Engineers) · 30 March 2026 · 5 min read

Soiling is the silent tax on solar. Independent studies in dusty climates measure 5–7% annual yield loss on uncleaned arrays — more after dust storms or during dry seasons. On a 10KW system, that is the output of an entire panel simply thrown away.

Clean at dawn or dusk when panels are cool. Thermal shock from cold water on a 65°C panel can micro-crack cells. Use a soft-bristle water-fed brush and plain water; detergents leave films that attract more dust, and pressure washers can breach edge seals.

Once a year, inspect beyond the glass: check MC4 connectors for discolouration, verify mounting torque, and look at your monitoring data for strings that underperform their siblings — the earliest sign of a failing connection or developing hot spot.

The cheapest maintenance tool is data. A Wi-Fi monitoring gateway shows daily yield per string; a sudden 6% drop after a dusty week is your signal to clean, and a persistent deficit is your signal to call support before a small fault becomes a dead string.
